Visitor Area Recycling Bin for Waste Sorting

Visitor Area Recycling Bin became part of our visitor experience after we noticed how frequently recyclable waste appeared in spaces designed for guests. Whether people were waiting for meetings, attending presentations or visiting colleagues, they often arrived carrying coffee cups, bottled drinks, brochures or small packaging that quickly accumulated around seating areas.

At first, visitors usually placed these items on tables or beside chairs because they were unfamiliar with the building and did not know where recycling facilities were located. Reception staff regularly collected recyclable materials, but the same situation repeated itself throughout the day as new visitors arrived.

We initially believed visitors would simply keep their recyclable items until leaving the building. Instead, we found that most people preferred to dispose of them before their meeting started. Without a convenient recycling point in the visitor area, recyclable materials naturally remained where people had been sitting.

The solution was to place a dedicated recycling bin directly inside the visitor area. Guests could separate paper, bottles and packaging without leaving the space or asking reception staff where the nearest recycling station was located.

The difference became clear almost immediately. Seating areas stayed tidy between appointments, tables remained available for new visitors and reception staff spent less time collecting recyclable materials left behind after every meeting.

One colleague observed that the visitor area looked consistently welcoming throughout the day. The furniture, décor and cleaning routine had not changed. The only real difference was that recycling now happened exactly where visitors finished using everyday items.

That experience showed us that visitor areas have their own pattern of use. People spend only a short time there, but they often arrive with items they no longer need. When recycling is placed where those moments naturally occur, the space remains organised without changing how visitors move through the building.
