Shared Desk Area Recycling Bin for Waste Sorting

Shared Desk Area Recycling Bin became an important part of our office after we introduced flexible seating instead of assigned desks. Employees selected different workstations each day, bringing laptops, notebooks, coffee cups and personal items with them. As people moved around the office, recyclable materials also appeared in different locations throughout the day.

At first, employees often left empty bottles, paper notes or food packaging on shared desks until they finished their work or moved to another meeting. Because no one permanently owned a particular workstation, recyclable items sometimes remained behind for the next person using the desk.

We originally believed that shared desks would naturally stay tidy because everyone knew another colleague would use the space later. Instead, we discovered that people were focused on their work and often postponed recycling until the end of the day, by which time they had already moved elsewhere.

The solution was to place a dedicated recycling bin within the shared desk area itself. Employees could separate paper, bottles and packaging immediately before leaving a workstation, making it easy to prepare the desk for the next colleague.

The improvement became noticeable very quickly. Shared desks remained ready for new users throughout the day, recyclable materials no longer accumulated between workstations and employees spent less time clearing items before beginning their work.

One team member commented that changing desks each morning became much easier because every workspace was already organised. Nothing about the office layout or booking system had changed. The only difference was that recycling happened before people moved to their next task.

That experience showed us that shared desk areas depend on every employee leaving the workspace ready for the next person. When recycling is available exactly where people finish working, keeping shared desks organised becomes a simple part of the daily routine.
