Public Spaces Recycling Bin for Waste Sorting

Public Spaces Recycling Bin became part of our school after we reviewed how the open areas between the entrance, corridors and shared facilities were used throughout the day. Pupils, staff and visitors passed through these spaces constantly, often carrying drinks, snacks, notices or packaging between one part of the building and another.

At first, recyclable materials appeared in several places rather than one predictable spot. Empty bottles were left on window ledges, notices replaced during timetable changes accumulated near noticeboards, and packaging from deliveries passing through the corridor stayed there until someone carried it elsewhere.

We initially assumed that recycling points inside classrooms and offices would also serve these shared areas. After observing daily movement through the building, we found that many people using these public spaces were simply passing through and would not walk into a classroom or office to recycle an item.

We placed dedicated recycling bins directly within the shared public spaces, positioned where corridors, the entrance and common areas naturally intersected.

The improvement became noticeable within a short time. Window ledges and noticeboard areas stayed clearer, packaging from deliveries no longer waited to be moved elsewhere, and shared areas kept a tidier appearance between lesson changes.

Facilities staff noted that maintaining these spaces required less repeated effort throughout the day, since recycling now happened exactly where people paused briefly between destinations.

That experience showed us that shared public spaces serve constant, brief movement rather than any single routine. When recycling is placed at those points of overlap, the areas stay organised without depending on any one room’s facilities.
