Home Office Recycling Bin for Waste Sorting

When I first started working from home, I honestly thought I wouldn’t create much waste. It was just me, one desk, one laptop and a cup of coffee every morning. A few weeks later I realised the opposite was true. Delivery boxes from office supplies, empty coffee bags, printer paper, plastic wrapping and bottles quietly piled up around the room without me even noticing.

One afternoon I joined an online meeting and my webcam accidentally showed a corner of the office where several cardboard boxes had been stacked for days. Nobody mentioned it, but I noticed it immediately. It wasn’t untidy because I was lazy. I simply didn’t have a place for recyclable materials inside the room.

I tried carrying everything to the kitchen recycling bins every evening, but the routine never lasted long. During busy days I would tell myself, “I’ll take it later,” and later usually became tomorrow.

The real change happened after placing a dedicated recycling bin next to my desk. Suddenly recycling became part of my working routine instead of another household chore. When I finished reading printed notes, they went straight into the paper compartment. Empty bottles disappeared immediately instead of sitting beside my monitor for the rest of the week.

Something unexpected happened after that. My workspace started feeling calmer. I spent less time moving random items away before starting work every morning, and the room looked ready even on the busiest days.

Friends occasionally visit my home office for coffee, and one of them asked where all the usual office clutter had gone. I laughed because I hadn’t really noticed the difference myself. Nothing else in the room had changed. The desk was the same, the shelves were the same and my daily workload certainly hadn’t become lighter.

The only real difference was having a recycling bin exactly where the waste was created. Sometimes the smallest change quietly becomes part of your routine until you can hardly imagine working without it.
