Coffee Area Recycling Bin for Waste Sorting

Coffee Area Recycling Bin became part of our office after we realised that the coffee area generated recyclable materials throughout the entire working day. Every coffee break produced paper cups, drink bottles, stirrers, milk cartons and small food packaging, making the area one of the busiest shared spaces in the workplace.

At first, recyclable materials were left on countertops or tables until someone had time to clear them away. Empty bottles gathered beside the coffee machine, used cups remained next to the sink and packaging from snacks often stayed on the counter because employees quickly returned to work after their break.

We originally assumed people would sort recyclable materials before leaving the coffee area. After observing everyday routines, we realised that most employees simply wanted to refill their drinks, have a short conversation and return to their desks without searching for another recycling point.

We introduced a dedicated recycling bin directly inside the coffee area so paper, bottles and everyday packaging could be sorted immediately after use without leaving the space.

The improvement became noticeable within a few days. Countertops stayed clear, the refreshment area remained organised throughout the day and recyclable materials disappeared as soon as they were no longer needed.

One colleague commented that the coffee area always looked ready for the next group, even during the busiest mornings. The coffee machine, furniture and daily routines had not changed. The improvement came from placing recycling exactly where refreshments were prepared and enjoyed.

That experience showed us that the coffee area is one of the most frequently visited places in an office. When recycling is integrated into that space, keeping the area organised becomes a natural part of every coffee break.
